US Senator Jamie Raskin called for the immediate release of Palestinian pediatrician Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, stressing that he is being held in an Israeli prison without charges, trial, or due process. Raskin pointed to reports that Abu Safiya has been subjected to torture, warning that the unlawful and horrific conditions of his detention are putting his life at risk.

Israeli forces arrested Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a pediatrician and director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, on December 27, 2024, during a raid on the hospital. Kamal Adwan Hospital was one of the last major hospitals operating in northern Gaza during periods of the war.

Since his detention, Abu Safiya has been held under Israel’s "Unlawful Combatant Law", which allows for administrative detention and its renewal every six months without formal charges or a public trial. His detention has exceeded 18 months, amid reports of torture and mistreatment.
