For the first time since the 1970s, the historic Al-Kamaliya School in Gaza City’s Al-Zaytoun neighborhood has welcomed students again, following cleaning and repairs carried out a few days after the ceasefire took effect. Thousands of students had spent the past months learning in tents or through small community initiatives before the reopening of the ancient school. The decision to restore and reopen Al-Kamaliya came after Israel’s deliberate destruction of most schools and universities in Gaza during two years of genocidal attacks, which left nearly the entire education system in ruins and forced Gazans to turn to historic and makeshift spaces for learning.
